American walnut

Botanical name: Junglas Nigra

General description:
Compared to the European walnut, the American one has a more uniform colouring, a brown-purple colour. The sapwood has a vertical and more regular pattern and the trunks grow much more in height.
Sapwood: from yellowish-white to light brownish.
Heartwood: from reddish-brown to dark brown.

Grain: straight and sometimes wavy.
Texture: medium.

Treatability: sapwood is treatable, heartwood is moderately treatable or not at all.

Drying: slow with a risk of collapse.
Planing: easy.
Gluing: easy.
Nailing and screwing: easy.
FInishing: no big difficulties.

Main uses: Interior furniture, flooring, walls, ceilings, doors and stairs, decorative veneers, carving and lathe-milling.
